OUR STORY
It started with a
belief about Nassau.
The Bahamas is one of the most photographed places on earth. Tourists document every corner of this island — the water, the architecture, the culture, the colour. But for years, the people who actually live here, who built here — they were being photographed as an afterthought.
A rushed phone selfie for LinkedIn. An old ID photo for the company website. A candid from someone's camera at a family gathering. Not one image that truly reflected who they had become.
That gap — between who Bahamian people are and how they were being seen — is where Tonya Alexis Studios was born.
Building something
The Bahamas had never seen.
When I decided to build Tonya Alexis Studios, I made one decision that guided everything else: this would not be a photography business. This would be an experience.
From the moment a client walks through our door — there is a lounge with refreshments, a custom playlist curated for their session, and an office manager whose entire purpose is to make them feel welcome before they ever step in front of the camera.
Because I learned something early in my career: the quality of the photograph is directly connected to how the person in front of the camera feels. When someone feels safe, seen, and cared for — that is when the real image emerges.
That is the Tonya Alexis experience. And it is unlike anything else in Nassau, The Bahamas.

I was asked once what separates my work from every other photographer in Nassau. My answer was the same then as it is now:
Photography is not picking up a camera and snapping. That is taking a photo. What I do is something different entirely.
Real photography — the kind that stops people, that hangs on walls, that changes how someone sees themselves — revolves around three things. Vision. Seeing the photograph before it exists. Preparation. Every decision made before the shutter fires. And patience. Waiting for the truth — not the pose.
Those three principles are not a marketing tagline. They are how I work in every single session — from a 5-minute passport photo to a 3-hour Luxe portrait experience.
